LOCAL HEROES FIRE UP COMMUNITY Firefighters Fill the Boot for families fighting muscular dystrophy MOUNT PLEASANT, Tenn. (July 15, 2010) – The Mount Pleasant Fire Department will be out in full force at the Movie Night on the Square next to City Hall from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 23 for its Fill the Boot drive for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The fire department hopes the Mount Pleasant community will help fill the Firefighters’ boots to overflowing. One benefit of their efforts is MDA Summer Camp, where children, ages 6-17, will enjoy an activity-packed, weeklong getaway. This year’s goal is to collect $800, which would send a child to camp. Summer camp is just one of the many services MDA offers to families. The donations collected by the Firefighters will also help fund local clinics and support groups, as well as fund vital research aimed at treatments and cures for neuromuscular disease. MDA is a voluntary health agency working to find treatments and cures for 43 neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive medical and community services, and far-reaching professional and public health education. – MDA –

The NBCCF rural scholarship is awarded to students enrolled in a CACREP-accredited counseling program who commit to serving in rural and underserved areas after graduation. The mission of the NBCC Foundation is to promote mental health through the advancement of professional counseling and credentialing. | Please Support TN HB 262 |
Friend of MPR writes " To whom it may concern:
I am contacting you to gauge your interest in a story regarding HB 262 in TN.
I am a staunch supporter of HB 262 filed by TN state Rep. Eric Watson. This legislation will require that the driver's license exam be administered solely in English. From a public safety perspective, it will ensure that all motorists exercising the privilege of driving on our roads can understand English and the many signs found on our roads. It is too dangerous and the risks too great to allow people to take this exam in another language, with a paper dictionary or with a translator or translated do*****ents.
Surely, some signs are self-explanatory but more often than not, there are signs out there that advise, warn or promote safety. If a prospective license candidate is allowed to take the exam in a language other than English, the risks are too great that someone will be injured or killed.
Take for example, a sign containing the following words:
Oncoming Traffic Has Extended Green Light
Slippery When Wet
Bridge Temporarily Out
Let's discuss Amber Alerts. If a motorist can't understand English well enough to read the alert and be able to effectively communicate with a 911 dispatcher in the split seconds needed, a child's life is at stake.
Take for example, the countless stories and experiences of police officers and first responders doing their job but because a motorist who was lawfully stopped cannot understand the lawful instructions of a police officer.
I am looking forward to discussing the public safety aspects of why this bill should pass, if you are interested.
Thank you,
Eddie Garcia

 | Family Files $6M Suit After Inmate Suicide |
Friend of MPR writes "FROM WSMV.COM
Family Files $6M Suit After Inmate Suicide Death Could Have Been Avoided If Warnings Heeded, Say Family
POSTED: 5:24 pm CST February 24, 2010
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The family of an inmate who hanged himself in jail has filed a $6 million wrongful death lawsuit against Maury County and its sheriff, Enoch George.
The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in federal court in Nashville, claims that Devin McKennon's suicide could have been avoided had deputies heeded warnings from a mental health professional.
A telephone message left for George was not immediately returned.
McKennon was arrested Feb. 23, 2009, in Maury County after a traffic stop.
Kenneth McKennon and Christina McKennon said in the suit that a crisis counselor warned jailers that the inmate was suicidal, yet they left him alone and unmonitored in a shower room.
McKennon hanged himself with a towel he tied to a door in the shower room."
